Fergus: The Burning Passion of a Golden Retriever

One such story is that of Fergus, a golden retriever who went from abused stray to therapy dog for burns survivors. It all started on a steamy August day in Los Angeles, when volunteer Barry Jacobs from the Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue (SCGRR) arrived at the Lancaster animal shelter to pull a golden in need. But as soon as Barry laid eyes on the dog in the holding area, he knew this was no routine rescue mission.
The poor creature was in horrific shape. His golden fur had been burned away, leaving a livid red stripe of blistered, weeping skin running the length of his spine. Appalled by the dog’s atrocious injuries, Barry learned the shelter staff planned to euthanize him, deeming his wounds too severe. But Barry wasn’t about to let that happen – not when a kindhearted stranger had gone to the trouble of bringing this dog to the shelter, clearly hoping he’d have a chance.
As the Penguin article describes, Fergus’s injuries had been deliberately inflicted, likely by someone pouring battery acid down his back. The poor pup had been the victim of a disturbing pattern of attacks on dogs in the area, including a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and several pit bulls. The LA County Mayor even offered a $25,000 reward, fearing a serial animal abuser could escalate to harming people.
Thankfully, Fergus survived the ordeal, and SCGRR took him in to care for his burns and find him a forever home. That’s when Victor and Anngel Benoun, longtime golden retriever lovers, stepped up to the plate. After losing their own beloved goldie Sammy, they saw Fergus’s story on the news and knew they had to adopt him.
A Resilient Retriever’s Road to Recovery
When Victor and Anngel first met Fergus at the animal hospital, they were shocked by his condition. “At first we weren’t sure he was a golden retriever because he resembled a coyote,” Anngel recalls. “He was so drawn in the face and so bony.” The poor dog was down to just 20 kilograms, when he should have been around 35.
Despite his emaciated state and horrific injuries, Fergus had an indomitable spirit that won over everyone he met. “The fact that this guy still trusts people, wags his tail and will let us treat him, considering the horrendous way that some person hurt him, is absolutely remarkable,” said the vet, Dr. Alan Schulman.
Over the next months and years, Fergus made an incredible recovery under the Benouns’ care. He gained nearly 10 kilograms of muscle thanks to their gourmet meals, and his fur grew back – though the badly damaged skin and nerves meant a few white stripes would never fully heal.
As the Benouns shared, Fergus was unfazed by his unusual appearance. “He wears his challenge on his back. It’s his badge of honour,” Anngel said. And while the trauma of his ordeal left him with night terrors at first, Fergus soon settled in and made their house a true home.
From Victim to Therapy Dog
Just when you thought Fergus’s story couldn’t get any more inspiring, he went on to do something truly remarkable. This resilient golden retriever became a therapy dog for burns survivors.
“AMC vet Dr Alan Schulman told NBC LA that Fergus won over the entire hospital staff with his cheerful approach to life,” the Penguin article notes. And it’s no wonder – despite the horrific way he had been treated, Fergus maintained an unwavering trust and joy in interacting with people.
Now, Fergus uses that resilient retriever smile to comfort patients in a hospital burns unit, offering companionship and hope to others who have endured unimaginable trauma. It’s a testament to the incredible resilience and capacity for forgiveness that can be found in man’s best friend.
